Suspect in robbery as Gumby dresses, clerk believes it is a joke

A person dressed as Gumby entered a convenience store in Southern California, claiming to have a gun and demanding money, but disorder costume and a thwarted skeptical clerk the potential thief.

Video surveillance shows some ' one - police think it was a man - in a bulky, green costume and another man entering a store 7-Eleven in Rancho Penasquitos Monday at the start.

Gumby demanded money, but the store clerk was a joke and ignored the character size of sound effects, saying it was clean and had no time to lose, said police in San Diego detective Gary Hassen.

Costumed character "cannot pick up the money and he cannot get the pistol," Hassen said. Therefore, when the other man takes across the store and honks, the would-be thief goes to the white van or money and takes off, Hassen said.

San Diego KGTV News reported that the clerk told his boss, he did not know Gumby and describes the character in the store as a "green Sponge Bob."

The clerk is not report to the meeting, but his boss called the police after viewing the tape of monitoring several hours later.

Police take very seriously the attempted theft, said Hassen.

Regardless of whether a potential thief is wearing a ski mask, a bandana, a hood or a large green head - it is still a disguise, he said.

A reward of up to $1,000 is offered by failure to the Crime.

No other flights Gumby were reported in the region, said Hassen.

There have been no arrests, but police are hoping that the surveillance tape that will change. People may not recognize the person in the Gumby costume, but his partner is very recognizable, Hassen said.
