Without Palin, Followers' Clout Will Dissipate

In her announcement that she will not seek the GOP nomination for president this year, Sarah Palin vowed to remain influential in the process saying, "You don't need a title to make a difference." In her case that may be true, but for her grassroots supporters, likely to scatter to a host of other candidates, it's unlikely they will be able to do the same.

[See political cartoons about Palin.]

"These supporters are likely to splinter into different camps and that means that as a decentralized force, they are going to lose a lot of steam and impact," one Republican strategist said.

A Washington Post/ ABC News Poll released Tuesday showed that Palin's supporters spread themselves among a slew of different candidates including Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain, former Sen. Rick Santorum, Rep. Ron Paul and Rep. Michelle Bachmann.

Unless Palin supporters moved as a group to another candidate, Republican pollster Kristin Soltis says, it is unlikely second-tier candidates such as Bachmann, Santorum or Gingrich are going to see any benefit from Palin staying out of the race. [Vote now: Who Will Sarah Palin Fans Support for 2012?]

If all would have gravitated toward just one candidate, we might have seen someone make that move from second-tier to frontrunner. Now, it is going to be up to struggling candidates to improve their messages in order to move up."

Brian Donahue,a GOP strategist and former Bush-Cheney campaign director says that while Palin fans aren't loyal to one candidate, many are viewing Herman Cain as the one who embodies the spirit of Palin.

"Supporters are going to go to different candidates, but Sarah Palin identified herself as the "buck the system" candidate, and if they are looking for someone to carry that banner, they are going to be looking at Cain." The businessman is an outsider in the political arena who has been able to garner support with strong debate performances and understandable, catchy economic slogans like his "9-9-9" plan.

However, despite fans adoring Palin's anti-establishment, socially conservative mojo, Soltis says in the wrecked economy, even a more moderate candidate like Romney can appeal to voters looking for strong economic messaging. "In one sense, it is counter intuitive to think Palin supporters would ever vote for Romney, but that comes with the assumption that the issues that most resonate with voters are social issues. That just isn't true in this election. Mitt Romney's focus on jobs transcends the ideological flavors of the GOP Party."

Tony Reynolds, the author of The Sarah Palin Rogue Revolution: Taking America by Storm says her supporters are devastated by the news she's not running and are feeling torn about who they will support now. For the strongest supporters, Donahue says, a Palin endorsement is going to be worth a candidate's weight in gold.

"They are loyal to her and they are going to follow whoever she says she believes in," he says.

5 Reasons Sarah Palin Needs to Join 2012 GOP Race Now

AppId is over the quota

Sarah Palin is running out of time. So are New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and any other Republicans mulling a bid for the presidency. The main reason: the political calendar is rapidly closing.

Of all those considering a late entry, Palin is the most likely to make the dive. But, according to several GOP and Democratic primary and campaign experts, she should move quickly or else end up being left behind by the established pack of Republican candidates already on the field.

[Check out political cartoons about Palin.]

Here are the top five reasons the experts cited for Palin to jump in now:

1. Deadlines for getting on ballots are near. South Carolina is Nov. 1; New Hampshire, Nov. 21. It would be absolutely useless to run if not on the ballots of those states which would be sympathetic and supportive of a Palin bid.

2. The Iowa caucus is set for February 6. Florida's bid to be first could push Iowa's date to January, possibly as early as January 2. That would leave exactly 12 weeks of campaigning for Palin and voters in Iowa and New Hampshire aren't usually kind to candidates who don't spend lots of time with them. Palin has been showing her biographical movie, The Undefeated, to Iowans and has a connection to the voters there, but other conservative candidates, notably Rep. Michele Bachmann, have been working the political landscape there for months. [Read: Insiders Say Palin, Christie Can Still Jump In.]

3. The media is losing interest. Many in the media feel that they are being used by Palin, who won't even provide schedules of her visits to Iowa. That feeling has seeped into coverage, turning voters against her too.

4. Donors and political organizers are taking sides. Most of the establishment players are lining up behind who they think will win the nomination and they won't break those commitments for a candidate like Palin who doesn't seem to have her heart into a full-time effort.

5. The average Wasilla temperature for October is 40 degrees. That's cold and by January 1st it's down to 20, reason enough to head to Florida and South Carolina for some campaign stops.

Really? Palin Dismisses Presidency As 'A Title'

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is confounding fans and foes anew, saying that she's nearly ready to make a decision on running for the GOP presidential nomination while dismissing the presidency as a "shackling ... title."

Amid speculation that she will announce her intentions as early as next week, Palin appears to be rethinking the value of running for and winning the White House, worried that it would muzzle her ability to be a maverick and rogue in the political process.

[Check out political cartoons about Palin.]

"Is a title worth it? Does a title shackle a person?" Palin said late Tuesday night on Fox New's Greta Van Susteren show.

"Is a title and is a campaign too shackling? Does that prohibit me from being out there, out of a box, not allowing handlers to shape me and force my message to be what donors or what contributors or what political pundidts want it to be? Does a title take away my freedom to call it like I see it and to affect positive change needed in this country? That's the biggest contemplation piece in my process," she added.

Her comments seemed to jar Van Susteren who suggested to Palin that the presidency provides a bigger platform from which to make change. "There's more power being president," said the host, prompting Palin to answer, "you don't need a title to make a difference." [See photos of Palin and her family.]

Palin said that her future role in American politics is what she and her family are discussing as she swiftly nears a self-imposed decision deadline.

"That's a debate right there itself, whether a title is needed to make a difference or [if] someone can be rogue and be maverick, can be passionate about issues and get people to think very wisely about the decisions and the candidates that we need in order to make the decisions for our country. Which is the best place for that individual to be?" she said. [Read: Insiders Say Palin, Christie Can Still Jump In.]

But she's not worried about getting in and winning, telling Van Susteren she would win.

As for when she will announce her decision, Palin noted that several ballot deadlines are fast approaching, forcing her hand. "Decisions have to be made."

Her comments about the presidency flabbergasted Democrats while Republicans said they are very confused about her plans.

GOP officials asked about her comments said that they indicate that Palin appears to be backing away from running. "She really needs to get in now if she wants to play. The door is closing," said one.

The Rogue Responds: Palin Attorney Threatens Lawsuit Over Biography

Sarah Palin's family lawyer has told Crown Publishing Group (CPG) she may sue the company for "knowingly publishing false statements" in a controversial book recently published on the ex-Alaska Governor.

In a letter to the publisher – obtained by ABC News – attorney John Tiemessen warns that Palin is considering launching the lawsuits over damning allegations in the much-publicized biography that she used cocaine and had extra-marital affairs. Tiemessen instructs the company to keep any emails or records related to the book, called The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin, and its veteran author, Joe McGinniss.

(LIST: Sarah Palin in The 2011 TIME 100 Poll)

The missive mentions an email obtained by Palin's legal team from McGinniss to a liberal Alaskan blogger in which he admits a lack of documents to substantiate the lurid claims surrounding the self-proclaimed “mama grizzly.” The biography was widely panned by critics for almost exclusively using unnamed sources.

"Legal review of my manuscript is underway and here's my problem: no one has ever offered documentation of any of the lurid stories about the Palins," McGinniss wrote in the email published by conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart.

But Random House - CPG's parent company - are standing by the tell-all. Stuart Applebaum, the spokesman for the publishers, wrote to ABC News: “We are confident that the reporting in The Rogue is solid, reliable, and well-substantiated. We stand by our publication and our author.” (via Slate)
