England have made three changes and Scotland six to their starting line-ups for their crucial World Cup Group B match in Auckland on Saturday.

For England, Delon Armitage replaces Mark Cueto on the left wing with Matt Stevens and Courtney Lawes also picked.

Scotland, who must win for a realistic hope of advancing, recall captain Alastair Kellock at lock and Euan Murray at tight-head prop.

Richie Vernon, Mike Blair, Simon Danielli and Joe Ansbro are also in.

Jim Hamilton, Geoff Cross, Kelly Brown, Rory Lawson, Graeme Morrison and Nick De Luca are the players to make way, while a further positional change sees Sean Lamont move from wing to inside centre.

The England changes, despite the dropping of Cueto who scored a hat-trick as England beat Romania 67-3 in their previous match, had been widely predicted.

Stevens replaces Alex Corbisieroto at loose-head prop having recovered from injury and Lawes takes Tom Palmer's place in the second row after serving a two-match ban.

"We thought Courtney was playing very well," said manager Martin Johnson. "He hasn't played for two weeks but we are confident he will come and perform for us."

Of the decision to pick Armitage over Cueto - who drops out of the 22 - Johnson added: "We've said all the way through if Delon's playing well and with form he's a Test player.

No favourite in this match, says Jonny Wilkinson

"Mark's injury was a factor [he had a back problem earlier in the tournament]. He's probably a game short of being back to where he should be."

However, while England need only a losing bonus point to be all-but certain of progressing, Scotland need a clear victory to guarantee their own place in the quarter-finals, a requirement reflected in coach Andy Robinson's selection.

Kellock is relishing England test

Kellock was omitted from the team to play Argentina, despite being named tournament captain in August, and comes in for Hamilton, who has been struggling with a knee injury.

Now scrum-half Lawson, the captain against Georgia and Argentina, must face up to being outside the matchday 22, with Blair preferred ahead of the Gloucester number nine and Chris Cusiter on the bench.

"It is important to have a running threat at nine," explained head coach Andy Robinson. "We felt Rory moved the ball around well in the games he has played but Mike, and Chris coming off the bench, actually add that running threat. In the way we want to ask questions of England, we need that at nine."

"It's a risk but it's a very bold selection by Scotland. What Andy Robinson says is that they have gone for real speed. Vernon replaces Brown at number eight and Murray, who performed well against Georgia, is back in for Cross in the front row after being unavailable for last Sunday's match in Wellington because of his religious beliefs.

Behind the scrum Lamont switches from the wing to inside centre, while Danielli takes Lamont's place on the wing, with Ansbro joining the Scarlets back in the midfield.

The permutations for the match are complex but if Scotland lose by more than seven points - hence failing to gain a losing bonus point - they are out of the World Cup.

However Robinson insisted they would still have to play a patient game, adding: "We can't go on the pitch and chase the game, we've got to build ourselves into the game.

"We're not playing Argentina, we're playing England. It's a completely different game.

The Royal College of Surgeons says poor access to facilities like operating theatres and scans means some abdominal emergencies are not spotted in time.

The RCS also says not enough patients receive critical care after surgery.

NHS managers said they, surgeons and ambulance services needed to work together to achieve "real change".

The RCS adds that junior staff are often left to deal with complications.

A report by the college highlights figures that show that about 170,000 patients undergo non-cardiac emergency operations each year.

Of those, 100,000 will develop complications and 25,000 of these patients will die.

Among the elderly, deaths can climb to 40%.

The report says the non-cardiac category includes most major gastro-intestinal and vascular procedures.

Emergency major gastrointestinal (abdominal) surgery has one of the highest mortalities, which can reach 50% in the over 80s, the report says.

The report also says that while survival rates vary from hospital to hospital, there can even be significant differences from day-to-day within the same institution.

It also says less experienced junior staff are often left to deal with complex and dangerous cases.

There is also the suggestion that elective or planned surgery has been prioritised over emergency surgery and some may link this to the pressure on hospitals to bring down waiting lists.

The study says hospitals need to provide fast access to operating theatres.

Iain Anderson, the author of the report and a consultant general surgeon at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, said trusts needed to acknowledge that problems exist and review the way their services work.

Iain Anderson: "There are 8 or 10 simple steps that could lead to substantial improvement"

"Every single emergency patient who comes through the door of an NHS hospital should have an individual risk assessment, diagnosis, treatment plan and post-operative care plan prioritised according to need," he said.

"Instead we have some of the NHS's sickest patients languishing on inappropriate wards, treated by juniors and with no plan in place to deal promptly with unexpected complications.

"These tend to be the patients who end up in intensive care units for lengthy periods of time or, sadly, too sick to be helped."

Mr Anderson told Radio 4's Today programme the high-risk nature of emergency abdominal surgery was not being recognised.

"These are the largest abdominal operations and emergency operations and I think there's been a general failure to understand just how high risk this surgery is, both by the patients - sometimes by the doctors - but certainly by health service managers."

'Forgotten patients'

The report suggests improvements but the surgeons say NHS managers in particular need to recognise the problems facing those described as the "forgotten patients" of the health service.

David Stout, deputy chief executive of the NHS Confederation which represents NHS managers, says: "If we want to make a real change to emergency services we need to get everyone - managers, surgeons and ambulances services - working together to ensure patients receive properly planned, quality surgical care."

Bruce Taylor, president of the Intensive Care Society, said: "It is vital that the guidance is initiated as it in the best interest for potentially vulnerable patients who require surgical procedures."

A spokesman at the Department of Health said the NHS was being modernised to improve results for patients and safety was at the heart of the service.

"It is essential that hospitals provide the safest possible care for patients," he said.

"Hospitals should follow this guidance and monitor the quality of care they are giving to their patients and ensure that they are providing appropriate levels of services and staffing."

TUCSON, Ariz (Reuters) - A federal judge on Wednesday ordered Tucson shooting suspect Jared Loughner to undergo four more months of psychiatric treatment in an effort to make him mentally competent for trial.

U.S. District Judge Larry Burns ordered the extension of Loughner's stay at a federal prison facility, where he is being forcibly medicated, after doctors testified during a daylong hearing that the college dropout was still delusional.

"The testimony convinces me ... that measurable progress toward restoration has been made," Burns said.

Burns in May found Loughner, 23, mentally unfit to stand trial and ordered him to be treated for four months at the prison facility in Springfield, Missouri.

With those four months expired, prosecutors asked for an eight-month extension, saying there is a substantial possibility that Loughner would be restored to mental competency by the end of that time.

Defense attorneys opposed the time extension and object to the forcible medication of Loughner with anti-psychotic drugs, saying it violates his due process rights.

Loughner is accused of opening fire January 8 at a crowded meet-and-greet with U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Six people died in the attack outside a suburban Tucson grocery store, including a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge.

Loughner pleaded not guilty to 49 criminal charges, including several counts of firs-degree murder. Local prosecutors have said they plan to file state charges, including murder, after the federal trial.

A handcuffed Loughner, whose brown hair was cropped close at his request, sat quietly at the defense table in a white T-shirt, khaki pants and tennis shoes during the proceedings.

'HE FEELS REMORSEFUL'

The courtroom was packed with victims and their families, along with members of the media.

Psychologist Christina Pietz, who is treating Loughner, testified that although Loughner has improved in the roughly 60 days he has been on anti-psychotic and other medications, he remains incompetent to stand trial.

It will take about eight months more for Loughner, who remains extremely depressed, to be restored to competency, Pietz said.

Although his delusions, including hearing messages from a television and thoughts that his lawyers are blackmailing him, have subsided, he is still delusional, she told the court.

Having told hospital staff and his father that he wants to kill himself, he remains on suicide watch, Pietz said, and knows what he is accused of doing.

"He understands that he murdered people. He talks about that. He feels remorseful for what he did," Pietz testified.

In the two months he has been on medication, his thoughts have become more organized. Hospital staff haven't seen him responding to auditory hallucinations in several weeks, Pietz said, conceding that the hallucinations might still be there.

Pietz said she has told Loughner that she thinks he is mentally ill.

"He was devastated. He doesn't want to be mentally ill," she said. "I explained to him that that I thought he had probably suffered from schizophrenia for several years."

Although Loughner doesn't want to take the medication, he has remained "passively resistant," Pietz said, adding: "We've never had to force him in any way to take the medication."

After an initial course of medication stopped July 1, his symptoms increased.

"It was much worse than it was prior to him taking medication," Pietz testified. "He paced so much he actually developed a blister on his foot."

A second expert witness for the prosecution, Dr. James C. Ballenger testified that Loughner is improving, though the psychiatrist admitted he has never met the defendant.

"His humanity is coming back," Ballenger said, based on his review of medical records, court documents and testimony showing that Loughner is becoming modest around hospital staff, showing remorse over the shooting and not pacing incessantly.

The Rogue Responds: Palin Attorney Threatens Lawsuit Over Biography

Sarah Palin's family lawyer has told Crown Publishing Group (CPG) she may sue the company for "knowingly publishing false statements" in a controversial book recently published on the ex-Alaska Governor.

In a letter to the publisher – obtained by ABC News – attorney John Tiemessen warns that Palin is considering launching the lawsuits over damning allegations in the much-publicized biography that she used cocaine and had extra-marital affairs. Tiemessen instructs the company to keep any emails or records related to the book, called The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin, and its veteran author, Joe McGinniss.

The missive mentions an email obtained by Palin's legal team from McGinniss to a liberal Alaskan blogger in which he admits a lack of documents to substantiate the lurid claims surrounding the self-proclaimed “mama grizzly.” The biography was widely panned by critics for almost exclusively using unnamed sources.

"Legal review of my manuscript is underway and here's my problem: no one has ever offered documentation of any of the lurid stories about the Palins," McGinniss wrote in the email published by conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart.

But Random House - CPG's parent company - are standing by the tell-all. Stuart Applebaum, the spokesman for the publishers, wrote to ABC News: “We are confident that the reporting in The Rogue is solid, reliable, and well-substantiated. We stand by our publication and our author.” (via Slate)

'Jersey Shore' Rejected By its Namesake State For Film Tax Break

Thanks to the folks at MTV, the Garden State is now recognized for its Italian-American-centric beaches, bars, gyms, tanning salons and laundromats. And for some reason, New Jerseyans aren't thrilled about it.

But Gov. Chris Christie is putting his foot down, blocking the MTV show Jersey Shore from receiving a $420,000 tax break. Though Christie suspended the film tax credit program in 2010 on behalf of budget cuts, the show's first season was filmed in 2009, qualifying it for funding.

"I have no interest in policing the content of such projects," Christie said. The governor, who is no fan of the show, noted that it is his role to make sure New Jersey taxpayers are not stuck paying "for a project which does nothing more than perpetuate misconceptions about the state and its citizens." Among those misconceptions is the belief that the cast is actually from Jersey; in reality, the vast majority of the self-proclaimed "guidettes" and "juiceheads" are from New York.

Lawmakers have criticized the TV show's impending tax break since it was first revealed by the statehouse bureau of The Star-Ledger of Newark and The Record newspapers earlier this month. MTV spoksewoman Noelle Llewelleyn told the AP she wouldn't comment on the tax issue but emphasized, "Jersey Shore itself will not be affected." NewsFeed gathers this is supposed to be a good thing.

For the uninitiated, the show's initial season focused on a group of young Italian-Americans living in Seaside Heights, a shore community along the boardwalk, and showcased their hard-partying lifestyle. Subsequent seasons have followed the cast to Miami and Italy, though the show's state-damning name has remained the same. Though some state officials denounce the show for tarnishing New Jersey's image, NewsFeed notes you can't discount the show for its cultural contributions: fist-pumping and smushing.

Microsoft has long accused Android of violating its patents.

Google said its US rival Microsoft was "resorting to legal measures to extort profit from others' achievements and hinder the pace of innovation".

Meanwhile, Samsung has received support from T-Mobile in its continuing legal fight with Apple.

Google said Microsoft was resorting to "the same tactic we've seen time and again".

It added: "We remain focused on building new technology and supporting Android partners."

Court side

Samsung has also received help from T-Mobile in its ongoing legal battle with Apple.

Samsung and Apple are facing each other in courts around the world as they wrangle over patents used in smartphones and tablets.

Apple has applied for an injunction that would stop Samsung selling many of its products in the US. A hearing on the injunction is scheduled for 13 October.

Now T-Mobile has filed papers with the court saying any ban would bring "unnecessarily harm" to it and its customers because it would not be able to find alternative products before the busy holiday season.

T-Mobile's backing for Samsung follows support from Verizon which earlier this week said legal rows over who owns which patent should not hamper the flow of future devices.

'Dramatic growth'

Microsoft and Samsung also said they would cross licence their patent portfolios.

South Korea's Samsung has further agreed to cooperate in the development and marketing of Windows Phone, Microsoft's own smart phone operating system.

Andy Lees, president of Microsoft's Windows Phone division, said: "Microsoft and Samsung see the opportunity for dramatic growth in Windows Phone and we're investing to make that a reality."

Samsung's executive vice president of global product strategy, Hong Won-Pyo, added that the two firms would "continue to bring the latest innovations to the mobile industry".

In a separate case, the special security court sentenced a protester to death for killing a policeman.

The medics had been released on bail after many staged a hunger strike.

They treated people injured when a protest movement calling for more rights for the country's Shia majority in the Sunni-ruled kingdom was crushed.

Human rights activists say the sentences against the medics come as a surprise.

They had been cautiously hopeful that the medics' release on bail was a sign that the government was softening its approach.

The Bahraini doctors and nurses were sentenced to between five and 15 years in prison on charges that include possessing unlicensed arms, seizing medical equipment, and provoking sectarian hatred.

All worked in the Salmaniya Medical Complex in Manama, which security forces entered on 16 March after forcefully clearing the nearby Pearl Roundabout of demonstrators.

Human rights activists say they were only doing their duty.

'Tortured'

The medics were also accused of refusing to treat injured security officials.

Relatives of some of the medics said in June that they were tortured into making false confessions.

A wave of mostly peaceful protests swept the country in February and March, but they were put down by force by the government, which called in troops from neighbouring Gulf states.

However, skirmishes are reported regularly as protesters try to keep their movement alive.

Bahrain's official news agency, BNA, said the protester sentenced to death, Ali Yusof al-Taweel, had killed a policeman in the Shia area of Sitra, south of Manama.

Earlier, the security court had sentenced two other protesters to death for killing a police officer.

On Wednesday, the court upheld life sentences for eight Shia activists convicted over their alleged role in protests.

It also upheld sentences of up to 15 years on 13 other activists.

Indonesia plane in Sumatra crash

The Casa C-212 aircraft sent an emergency signal while flying between North Sumatra and Aceh provinces, the transport ministry's Herry Bakti said.

He said it lost touch with air-traffic control and crashed at 1,100m (3,600ft), near the North Sumatran village of Bahorok.

Rescue teams were reportedly being hampered by rain and rough terrain.

"The plane crashed sometime between 7:28 (00:28 GMT) and 8:05 this morning around Bahorok mountain, which is about 36 nautical miles northwest of Medan," Mr Bakti, the ministry's aviation head, told AFP news agency.

The ministry said the craft's wreckage had been spotted during aerial surveillance and its body appeared to be largely intact.

There was no word on the fate of its 14 passengers, including four children, and four crew members.

Indonesia relies heavily on air transport and has a poor aviation safety record.

In May, 27 people died when a passenger plane crashed into the sea off the eastern province of West Papua.

Hong Kong schools, financial markets, and businesses have shut as Typhoon Nesat brought howling winds, squalls of rain and rough seas to the territory.

The city issued a number eight storm signal before 05:00 on Thursday (21:00GMT on Wednesday).

All ferry services and some bus services have been cancelled and trains are operating at a reduced frequency.

Few people were on the streets, with 100km/h (60mph) winds shredding umbrellas and making it hard to walk.

Local radio reported that two people, including a taxi driver, were injured when scaffolding collapsed onto a taxi.

And a large cargo barge crashed into the seafront after slipping its moorings, television footage showed. About 50 people had to be evacuated from a nearby block of flats.

Some flights have been delayed.

Lynn Chan, a lawyer who works in the city's central business district, said she struggled through the wind and rain only to find her office was closed.

"I am the only person here," she said.

"I guess I should have listened to the news before I set out."

At noon local time (04:00 GMT), Typhoon Nesat was 370km (230 miles) southwest of Hong Kong and was moving towards China's Hainan Island.

At least 18 people were killed when the typhoon swept through the Philippines earlier this week.

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange has shut for the day, with the Hong Kong Observatory saying the number eight storm signal would be hoisted for most of Thursday.

Government offices and courts have also closed, delaying the announcement of a landmark ruling on a closely watched immigration case.

Nokia to cut another 3,500 jobs

29 September 2011 Last updated at 12:21 GMT Nokia has been slower than rivals to take advantage of the lucrative market for smartphones Mobile phone giant Nokia is to cut 3,500 jobs and close a plant in Romania as part of its restructuring plan.

The cuts are in addition to thousands of job losses already announced by Nokia, which in April unveiled a 1bn-euro cost-cutting programme.

Nokia said it would shut its plant in Cluj, Romania, and cut jobs in its location division, whose products include maps for mobile phones.

It is also reviewing the future of plants in Finland, Hungary and Mexico.

"We must take painful, yet necessary, steps to align our workforce and operations with our path forward," said chief executive Stephen Elop.

Nokia shares have almost halved this year and opened down 1.7% on Thursday, but staged a recovery and were 1% up by midday.

"Nokia plans to close its manufacturing facilities in Cluj, Romania, by the end of 2011... and plans to close its (locations and commerce development) operations in Bonn, Germany and Malvern, US," by the end of next year, the company statement said.

Geoff Blaber, analyst at CCS Insight, said: "The scaling back of its manufacturing presence was sadly inevitable but it's clear that Elop is not afraid of taking the tough decisions to ensure Nokia's long-term survival."

Nokia's statement said the company would look to "focus its feature phone manufacturing on those locations with optimal proximity to suppliers and key markets".

Some analysts interpreted this as a signal that Nokia could shift manufacturing to Asia.

"If you think about where the markets are, the growth markets are in Asia, and it makes sense to manufacture a product close to the customer," said Pohjola Bank analyst Hannu Rauhala.

In July, the company plunged into the red as sales fell and margins were squeezed in the second quarter.

The firm made a net loss of 368m euros ($521m; £323m) in the three months to the end of June, compared with a profit of 227m euros a year earlier. Net sales fell by 7% to 9.3bn euros.

Nokia has lost ground to competitors such as Apple's iPhone and phones using Google's Android operating system.

The airport is about 5km (3 miles) from central Sirte.

Forces loyal to Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) also recently seized Sirte's port.

Nato planes have been carrying out air strikes in the area against military targets including ammunition storage facilities.

Sirte and the city of Bani Walid are the last major areas under the control of Gaddafi loyalists, and both have seen heavy fighting in recent days.

Col Gaddafi's whereabouts are still unknown, though NTC officials have said they believe he may be hiding in Libya's southern desert.

Ohio governor commutes sentence of death row inmate

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - Ohio's Republican Governor John Kasich on Monday commuted the death sentence of convicted killer Joseph Murphy to life without the possibility of parole, his second such action in the past three months.

The application of Ohio's death penalty came under question in July when a federal judge issued a stay of execution for another inmate and called the state's practices haphazard.

In commuting his sentence, Kasich called Murphy's 1987 murder of Ruth Predmore, 72, "heinous and disturbing," but the death penalty inappropriate given a brutal upbringing and relatively young age at the time of the crime.

Murphy was 21 when he stabbed Predmore in the neck during a robbery, severing the carotid arteries and jugular vein. His execution had been scheduled for October 18 and the Ohio Parole Board had recommended that his sentence be commuted.

"Even though as a child and adolescent Murphy suffered uniquely severe and sustained verbal, physical and sexual abuse from those who should have loved him, it does not excuse his crime," Kasich said in a statement.

Kasich commuted another inmate's death sentence to life in June and has delayed other executions. A joint state Supreme Court and bar association task force is planned to review the state's administration of the death penalty.

The task force will not address whether the state should or should not have a death penalty.

Ohio has executed four men in 2011, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Thirty-six people have been executed in the United States so far this year.

PERUGIA, Italy (Reuters) - Jailed American student Amanda Knox is anxious but hopeful of walking free from the Italian prison where she has been held for the murder of her roommate in an Italian university town nearly four years ago, her father said.

Knox, from Seattle, is serving a 26-year jail term after being found guilty along with her Italian ex-boyfriend of murdering British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia during an orgy that turned violent.

A verdict in her appeals trial is days away.

"The simplest thing of lying down in the grass is something she's looking forward to, just the aspect of petting one of her cats," said her father, Curt Knox, who has been in court daily as the appeals trial draws to a close.

"It's the smallest things that are going to be a life-changer for her."

Knox's hopes of going home have been boosted by a forensics review that discredited key DNA evidence used to secure a conviction, and her family have been conducting a tireless and well organized public relations campaign on her behalf.

Regular media appearances by family members and friends have helped counteract the lurid image of "Foxy Knoxy," the cunning, sex-obsessed party girl with a penchant for dangerous games portrayed by prosecutors and in some media accounts.

The 24 year-old, who was studying in Perugia at the time of Kercher's murder, is now widely seen in the United States as an innocent American entangled in an opaque and unfair justice system and her release is widely expected.

She has appeared gaunt and pale during closing arguments by prosecutors and lawyers and her father said she had a particularly tough day on Monday when one lawyer called her "diabolic" and a "she-devil."

"She has definitely lost some weight, it's tough for her to sleep," he said. "If you put yourself in her shoes where in a matter of days a judge and jury are going to decide what happens to your life, I don't know if I'd sleep very well either."

Curt Knox said his family hoped to one day reach out to the family of Kercher, who was on a year-long exchange programme in Italy when she was killed.

"In interviews we have done we have tried to send our deepest condolences for the loss of their daughter," he said.

"But until they know Amanda had nothing to do with the loss of their daughter I don't know how they would accept our condolences personally. But I really look forward to the day we can reach out to them and they know the truth that Amanda had nothing to do with it."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Toy companies trying to win over choosy U.S. shoppers are under more pressure than ever to offer parents something their children will play with after Christmas, according to two industry veterans.

"With the economy the way it is, they are still going to spend on their kids," said TimetoPlayMag.com Editor-in-Chief Jim Silver, "but they are horrified of buying a toy, spending $50, and having it tossed in the closet after 10 minutes."

Silver and Christopher Byrne, the website's content director, have been compiling a list of hot toys for about a decade.

Their closely watched "Most Wanted" list released on Tuesday mostly features playthings that they believe can hold a child's attention. Items range from iStar Entertainment's $10 yo-yo like FyrFlyz toy that lets kids put on a light show to a $100 learning tablet "LeapPad Explorer" by LeapFrog Enterprises.

"Parents want value, and value can come at $10 or a $100," Silver told Reuters, adding that toy companies are increasingly offering marquee brands at a wide range of prices to win shoppers at the high and low ends.

Many are also using technology to boost the perceived value of a toy.

For instance, Spinmaster put 3-D graphics and animation on the trading cards in its Redakai game, while a stunt car by Canada's Thinkway Toys is powered by light. Both made it to the top toy list.

The list, compiled for the website www.TimetoPlayMag.com, gets close scrutiny from executives and analysts ahead of the holiday shopping season, when some toy companies make about a third of their annual sales.

U.S. retail toy sales are up just 2 percent from a year earlier for the 12 months ended July, according to market research firm NPD Group.

With such modest growth, cut-throat competition is a given.

Toys R Us, the world's largest toy store chain, has already broadened its assortment of exclusive products and plans to spend more on television ads this year, while discounter Wal-Mart Stores cut prices on dozens of toys to $15 and resumed its layaway plan for them after a five-year break.

Sears unit Kmart is trying to win sales by revamping its website, offering layaway and carrying toys they expect to hold a child's interest.

"You want your child... to open up the gift and just smile ear to ear, but at the same time, especially if you are the parent, you want that child to be playing with the toy all the way through January, not all the way through dinner and over with it," Julia Fitzgerald, chief marketing officer for Sears' toy business, said in an interview.

IN BRANDS WE TRUST

Toys from prominent companies such as Mattel Inc, Lego, Hasbro and MGA also made Silver and Byrne's list.

From Mattel are "Angry Birds Knock On Wood," a tabletop version of the highly popular game app for the Apple iPhone; the "Monster High Dead Tired" doll line that features offspring of famous monster characters themed on a pajama party; and the Hot Wheels wall tracks.

MGA's "Lalaloopsy Silly Hair Doll" with bendable, plastic hair, and Hasbro's Nerf Vortex blasters that shoot plastic discs instead of foam darts also impressed Silver and Byrne.

Smaller toymakers also made their mark.

For instance, WowWee is betting big on Lite Sprites, a line of playsets that allow kids to play with color and light with the wave of a wand.

One of Byrne's favorites comes from Cepia, whose Zhu-Zhu pets were the hottest toys of 2009.

Asked why he was so taken with the company's new "DaGeDar" collectible toys for boys, Byrne said: "I loved collecting, I loved competition and I was always in detention for bringing toys to school."

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Student Republicans at the University of California at Berkeley have stirred up the famously left-wing campus with plans for a sale of baked goods priced according to the race and gender of buyers.

A Facebook promotion of the event, set for Tuesday, has drawn cries of racism and misogyny on the social networking site, and student body president Vishalli Loomba called what the Berkeley College Republicans were doing offensive.

The school's chancellor, Robert Birgeneau, weighed in on Monday night with an open letter condemning the planned bake sale as contrary to campus "Principles of Community" that call for debate to be conducted in a respectful manner.

Organizers say their "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" is meant as satiric political commentary on newly passed legislation that would allow California's public universities to once again consider the race, gender, ethnicity and national origin of admissions applicants.

The sale is slated to take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. near the location of a campus phone bank set up by supporters of the bill, SB 185, to lobby for Governor Jerry Brown to sign the measure into law.

The original Facebook post for the event said pastries sold at the event would be priced at $2 each for white customers, $1.50 for buyers of Asian descent, $1 for Latinos, 75 cents for black customers and 25 cents for Native Americans. All women would get a 25 cent discount.

The post said the pricing structure was designed to "ensure the equitable distribution of BAKED GOODS to our DIVERSE! student body."

Loomba said Berkeley "students are talking about this everywhere I go."

"They've been able to get a lot of publicity, but at what cost? They are creating an environment of divisiveness," she told Reuters. "You can't justify doing something this offensive and making students of this school feel uncomfortable."

BALLOT MEASURE

While enactment of SB 185 does not require university admissions officers to give preferential treatment to applicants on the basis of race or gender, it would allow them to consider such factors.

A statewide ballot measure approved by California voters in 1996 banned the use of race and gender preferences in state university admissions, hiring and contracting. The California Supreme Court upheld its constitutionality last August.

SB 185 was presented to Brown on September 9 and becomes law in 30 days even without his signature, unless he vetoes it.

Berkeley's student government passed a resolution in support of SB 185 last week, and organized the telephone lobbying effort on its behalf, prompting the Berkeley College Republicans to plan their bake sale.

On Sunday, the student government unanimously passed a resolution decrying the College Republicans' move.

In his letter Monday night, the chancellor said the issue was not the group's opinions, but how they were expressed.

"The issue is not whether one thinks an action is satirical or inoffensive, the issue is whether community members will be intentionally -- or unintentionally -- hurt or demeaned by that action," Birgeneau wrote, adding, "intelligent debate is based on mutual respect."

Leaders of the student Republicans were not immediately available for comment. But the group's president, Shawn Lewis, said in a statement posted on its website that "physical threats" were made against organizers of the bake sale, including suggestions that cupcakes would be purchased and then hurled back in protest.

"Threatening and political intimidation should not be part of the (campus) community," Lewis said. "What I have seen and heard in response to the Berkeley College Republicans' 'Increase Diversity Bake Sale' has been far from healthy disagreement or challenging of ideas."

In addition to the phone bank, a free giveaway of baked goods, called Conscious Cupcakes, was planned as a riposte to the College Republicans' sale. Conscious Cupcakes' Facebook page indicated "641 attending."

DETROIT (Reuters) - Talks between the United Auto Workers and Ford Motor Co for a new labor contract as well as ratification of the proposed agreement with General Motors Co were nearing a conclusion.

"We have accelerated our talks," Joel Goddard, co-chairman of the UAW Ford National Negotiating Committee said in a recorded call on Monday evening, citing the involvement of UAW President Bob King in the constant meetings with Ford negotiators.

"We are optimistically hopeful that we will have good news for our membership by the end of the week," he added.

Teams of negotiators for the union and Ford, the only U.S. automaker to avoid bankruptcy, have been meeting for about two months. Financial issues typically are addressed in the final stages of negotiations.

The union began an intense focus on Ford a day after the UAW, failing to finalize a deal with Chrysler Group LLC, extended its contract with the Fiat SpA-controlled automaker until October 19.

Chrysler and UAW negotiators held "high-level" discussions over the weekend and were scheduled to continue on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, UAW-represented workers have begun voting on a tentative four-year deal reached a week ago with GM. Union officials hope to wrap up that voting by Thursday and early results show most union locals supporting the deal.

As of Tuesday morning, at least 15 union locals had voted for ratification, three had voted against it and 35 more had yet to vote, according to a union dissident group and reports by individual union locals.

Union dissidents are urging workers to vote against the deal, citing a failure by UAW negotiators on a number of issues including fears about the future of GM pensions to union retirees.

The GM deal would keep or create more than 6,000 factory jobs, raise wages for entry-level workers, and guarantee all workers bonuses of at least $11,500 over four years.

The Detroit labor talks will set wages and benefits for about 112,500 union-represented autoworkers and establish a benchmark for wages at auto-parts suppliers and nonunion plants run by Asian and German automakers.

New four-year contracts for GM and Chrysler workers would be the first since those two companies were bailed out by the Obama administration in 2009. UAW-represented autoworkers have gone without a base pay increase since 2003.

The uncertain outlook for auto sales in 2012 and the risk of a renewed U.S. recession have made the Detroit automakers reluctant to offer traditional wage increases. Also, GM and Chrysler UAW workers gave up the right to strike for these contract negotiations as part of the government bailout.

The talks with Ford, playing out at the company's Dearborn, Michigan, headquarters known as "the Glass House," will be patterned roughly after the deal that covers 48,500 GM employees.

Ford's roughly 41,000 UAW-represented workers have the right to strike and have the highest expectations for wages and bonuses because of the automaker's performance. The UAW has not had a strike at Ford since 1976.

The union has made job retention and expansion a top goal in the talks. The UAW may seek to have Ford shift work from Mexico to U.S. plants, something the union touted in its deal with GM.

Ford builds the Fusion mid-sized sedan and Fiesta small car at plants in Mexico, where it also has an engine plant.

In recent months, scores of women have driven vehicles in Saudi cities in an effort to put pressure on the monarchy to change the law.

The sentence comes two days after the Saudi leader King Abdullah announced women would be allowed to vote for the first time in 2015.

Two other women are due to appear in court later this year on similar charges, correspondents say.

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - Indiana state police said on Monday they have no suspects in the deaths of five people in rural Franklin County, and they appealed to the public to provide tips and leads.

With no clear motive or suspects identified, residents living in and around the town of Laurel, about 60 miles southeast of Indianapolis, are expressing concern about the murders, said Franklin County Sheriff Ken Murray Monday evening. "Who wouldn't be," he said.

Authorities on Sunday found the body of a man at one address and then recovered four more bodies at an address across the street -- two male and two female.

That deaths have put residents on alert for any suspicious activities, which has resulted in numerous tips being sent to police.

"Every tip is being investigated," said Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin.

Autopsies of four of the victims were conducted Monday in Indianapolis and the fifth will take place Tuesday. In addition to the cause of death, investigators hope the autopsies will offer clues to the crime. Police decided to withhold the identity of all the murder victims until autopsies are complete and family members notified.

"At this time there is no person or persons of interest or suspect/suspects," Indiana State Police said in a statement. "We are continuing to follow numerous tips and leads and we are encouraging the public to continue contacting us with those tips and leads."

State police plan a news conference for Tuesday in nearby Brookville, Indiana to provide updates. Police still do not know if the attacker or attackers were among the dead.

Police said they were tipped off about the bodies by passersby who found a child wandering without adult supervision and notified police. The deputy talked with the child and then called for backup, police said.

Cinema goers call 3D a 'gimmick'

27 September 2011 Last updated at 14:33 GMT Deathly Hallows is one of the highest grossing films so far this year British cinema goers have said 3D makes little difference to the quality of a movie, according to a new survey.

Many of this year's blockbusters such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon were made using the technology.

But, responding to a YouGov poll, 41% of people called it a gimmick with just 19% agreeing that 3D improves a film.

Just under half of those polled said it made no difference at all.

Price does not appear to be an issue for more than a third of cinema goers who said that even if the more expensive 3D films tickets were the same price as their 2D counterparts, they would rather see a film in the traditional two dimensional format.

Another 3D movie - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, starring Johnny Depp, proved a big draw for audiences in 2011.

It, along with Harry Potter and Transformers, make up the top three biggest earners at the UK box office so far this year, YouGov said.

Improved technology

However, the findings suggest people "may not have flocked to films such as these because of their new 3D look", but were attracted by reviews, advertising or branding.

In August, the British Film Institute (BFI) said UK box office takings were up last year despite a decline in the number of cinema visits.

The BFI said the increase was boosted by the impact of 3D premium ticket pricing.

Although first introduced in 1915, 3D technology has steadily improved, reaching its peak in 2009 with James Cameron's Avatar.

The director filmed the movie using a unique 3D camera system which he had developed. It went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time.

The survey did suggest that 52% of audiences would be more likely to see a 3D film if they did not have to wear the glasses needed for the effect to work.
