Plane crash kills 10 people in Northern Brazil

Rio de Janeiro (Reuters)-Ten people were killed when a single-engine plane they were travelling crashed in the small town of Almeirim in Brazil's North, said the local government, Wednesday (16/3).

According to a report by Xinhua, the plane disappeared from radar screens on Tuesday late at night, but the newly discovered puingnya on Wednesday morning, as the site of the accident in the dense forest. There are no penyintas in the accident, the Government said.

The plane, a single-engined aircraft Embraer 821-Caraja, off-the shelf of Belem, capital of Para State, and had an accident just 20 kilometres from Monte Dourado Airport in the city. The victim's name has not been announced.

The plane, belonging to the Fretax, aircraft rental company transporting nine employees of the engineering company Cesbe to the water power plant Santo Antonio do Finger, which is being built in the State of Amapa, which embraces.

The cause of the accident remains unknown and will be investigated by the Department of aviation, Xinhua said Thursday.

Fretax and Cesbe issued a statement deploring the accident and said they would provide assistance to families of the victims.

Fretax and the pilots have been in good health condition and inspection of the aircraft was done on a regular basis.

Brazil began to discuss the purchase of the missiles Russia

Sao Paulo (Reuters)-Brazil on Wednesday agreed to start talks with Russia on the purchase of ground-air missile.

The agreement was reached at a meeting between the Prime Ministers of Russia Dmitry Medvedev and Brazil Vice President Michel Temer, and negotiations will begin in March, the Foreign Ministry said.

A Ministry statement said, the two countries have commitments on "development of new defense products and joint participation of strategic defense companies in Brazil the production process with full and effective technology transfer."

Brazil wants to develop a domestic defense industry and in years gone by associate defence contracts with full technology transfer, so that the country can make its own weapons in the foreseeable future.

The Ministry of Defense said Brazil wants to buy from Russia three ground-air missile batteries distance are two Undergraduate and Pantsir-battery anti-aircraft missile system which can be carried everywhere.

The agreement was reached after a visit to Moscow in late January by General Jose Carlos de Nardi, head of the Joint Chiefs of staff of the armed forces. He led a delegation of government officials and the company.

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff also discussed that issue during his visit to the capital of Russia on Dec.

There has been no statement regarding the value of the contract.

Medvedev and Rousseff held talks on matters of Defense, energy and nuclear, as well as the upcoming meeting of the Group of countries of the G20 group of advanced economies and the rapidly growing BRICS countries economy.

The leaders of the BRICS--Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa--will hold a summit meeting in Durban, South Africa, in March.

Medvedev was in Sao Paulo to attend the annual meeting of the bilateral Joint Commission on high level together, Temer AFP.

Brazilian riot police have stormed an illegal settlement of landless workers in Sao Paulo state to reclaim the land for its private owners.

Several cars were set alight as residents tried to defend their homes in the Pinheirinho slum in Sao Jose dos Campos, and 16 people were arrested.

Police say they are now in control of the area after encountering less resistance than had been feared.

Some 6,000 residents are being evicted from the eight-year-old settlement.

Eviction

Around 2,000 police officers were involved in the operation to reclaim the private land, which had been occupied by landless workers and turned into a community.

Local government officials and social workers have been going door-to-door to evict families and help them move to alternative accommodation.

Some are being put up in temporary accommodation, while others are being offered transport back to their original home villages.

The evictions follow a legal battle between the residents and administrators for the bankrupt property company that owned the land.

Activists who supported the residents briefly blocked a main road in protest against the eviction.

The Pinheirinhos squatter camp established by a land invasion in 2002 had developed into a settled neighbourhood, complete with shops and churches.

A decade of strong economic growth and social spending has helped millions of Brazilians out of poverty into the expanding middle class.

But millions of others are still poor, and extreme inequality persists.

Brazil starts World Cup countdown

Construction workers refurbishing the famous Maracana stadium in Rio are on strike Confidence

  President Rousseff is confident Brazil can deliver the stadiums on time Brazil has begun its countdown for the 2014 World Cup, 1,000 days before it hosts the football tournament. President Dilma Rousseff launched the event at a stadium in Belo Horizonte alongside the footballing legend Pele, who is Brazil's World Cup ambassador.
Ms Rousseff promised the new stadiums and other infrastructure required would be ready on time, despite major difficulties and delays.
The tournament will kick off on 12 June 2014.
Before then, Brazil must build or upgrade 12 stadiums.
Many of them are behind schedule and over budget.
At some, construction workers have been on strike - including the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro where the final will be played and the Mineirao ground in Belo Horizonte where President Rousseff started the countdown.
Building work on the new Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo - which is hoping to host the opening game - only began in May.
Brazil must also deliver huge infrastructure developments such as roads and airport terminals so that fans can move between the 12 venues spread across the huge country.
Much of that transport infrastructure is anyway badly needed to meet the demands of Brazil's booming economy and expanding middle class.
"Investing in infrastructure is a way of saying no to the international crisis affecting countries in the Eurozone and the US," Ms Rousseff said.
The 2014 World Cup will be the first in South America since Argentina hosted the tournament in 1978, and the first in Brazil since 1950.
Correspondents say most Brazilians are confident they will make a success of hosting the tournament - after all, they have already won it World Cup five times.
Rio de Janeiro is also due to host the Olympic Games in 2016.
The two tournaments are being seen as statements of Brazil's emergence as a rising global economic power of the 21st Century, much as the 2008 Beijing Olympics served as a calling card for China's confident new role on the global stage.
