The European Union added three months to Syria sanctions

Brussels (Reuters)-Foreign Ministers of the European Union (EU) agreed to continue enforcing sanctions to Syria and add them into three more months and promising to continue giving humanitarian aid to war-torn countries.

"We agreed to extend the sanctions to Syria plus three months again. We change it so that Syria get pressure means for the purpose of protecting the civil population from the Government army attacks, "said EU Foreign Minister Catherine Ashton in her remarks while attending a news conference on Monday (local time) in a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union.

"We will continue our efforts in helping the innocent victims of conflict in Syria," said Ashton.

He explained that the EU provided aid worth of 600 million euros to the victims of the war.

Based on estimates of the last sacrifice according to the UN, at least 70,000 people were killed and 700 thousand others forced out of Syria since the fall of the people's action who want President Bashar Al Assad in March 2011.

The European Union is the largest trading partner of Syria. The EU imposed economic sanctions on the Government of Bashar by 2011.

The sanctions include a ban on exports of arms embargo, a freezing of assets and travel to more than 120 individuals and 40 companies.

The EU also prohibits Member States importing crude oil from Syria and also the blockade trade commodity nature such as gold, precious metals and gold belongs to a public body and the central bank of Syria.

European tech could propel Orion

Europe is looking to play a significant role in America's plans for the manned exploration of deep space.
Nasa has detailed its vision for a huge new rocket system that could send astronauts to asteroids and even Mars.
European engineers believe they could contribute to this project by providing the propulsion unit that pushes the rocket's capsule to these locations.
Participation would require the agreement of European member states and a budget to fund the development work.
A formal proposal is likely to be presented for consideration by the bloc's space ministers when they meet next year in Italy.
One attraction is that it would almost certainly lead eventually to European astronauts being invited to take part in deep space missions.
If the project is approved, engineers would hope to have the propulsion unit, or service module, ready to fly on the American rocket's first test flight.
"The first launch is planned in 2017, and if we can get all the preparatory work done in time for getting a decision at the upcoming ministerial conference - we will be able to provide our share to the maiden flight. The development time would be tight, but possible," said Thomas Reiter, the director of human spaceflight at the European Space Agency (Esa).
Nasa's new Space Launch System (SLS) is a multi-billion-dollar venture to take humans beyond the International Space Station (ISS) and the confines of low-Earth orbit.
It calls for a rocket that is taller and more powerful even than the boosters that took man to the Moon in the 1960s and 70s.
Atop this vehicle would sit a capsule, called Orion, equipped with the life support technologies able to sustain humans on long-duration missions.
But this capsule will need a propulsion unit to guide its path across space.
Esa engineers, in discussion with their US counterparts, have proposed they take responsibility for this unit.
Its design would lean heavily on technologies already developed for the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV).
This is Europe's robotic freighter, which is flown regularly to the ISS to keep it stocked up with fuel, air, water, food and spare parts.
The ATV is also used to drive the 400-tonne orbital complex higher into the sky to stop it falling back to Earth.

In the technical discussions between Nasa and Esa, the concept now being proposed is to take the service module from the ATV, upgrade it and give to Orion.

This arrangement will see three further ATVs fly to the station and takes in the period up to about 2016/17.
Thereafter, Europe's participation in the SLS and Orion might be seen as its contribution to the common operating costs of the ISS.
But for this concept to be taken any further, European ministers will need to approve a budget at their high-level council in 2012.
The budget would be on the order of several hundred million euros.
Ministers would also want to be convinced that the development offered something additional to European capability in space - a capability that could be deployed in other types of activity.
"So now we are looking into developing this ATV derivative as a service module for Orion but also making the first steps in advancing certain systems in the areas of propulsion and GNC; and those systems could be used eventually in a big European space tug that could remove old satellites or debris from orbit, for example," Dr Reiter told BBC News.

FRANKFURT/London (Reuters)-the global automotive industry descends in Frankfurt next week to show the latest models hopes will move away from an economic slowdown in some of its biggest markets, like government spending cuts chip away at consumer confidence in Europe.

Car registrations in some major European markets actually rose last month, but analysts are warning the figures, which reflect the cars purchased two months ago, before the fall of stock market of the summer, do not tell the whole story.

"Certainly a point of view, a lot has changed during this time," said Barclays Capital analyst Michael Tyndall. "I take little comfort from August good numbers".

"It was very aptly said that we must be careful that we do not talk ourselves into a recession," he said. "It is very easy from a consumer point of view of getting to a point where you don't want to spend on anything--is very uncertain," he added.

But even if the car industry is expecting something far short of an accident, will face the slowdown without the support of public loans and generous scrap schemes that saved the market last time.

PricewaterhouseCoopers analysts see a "difficult" the last quarter of 2011 in Europe that will drag the whole year for a dip of 2.5 per cent in the European automotive market to 13.4 million vehicles.

Josselin Chabert, analyst at Autofact unit PwC said: "With the debt crisis, the reduction of economic forecasts and weak prospects for the labour market, numerous European countries could experience a difficult months ahead."

European car makers may have scrambled to increase their presence in China and other emerging regions, but they still rely on Europe for most of its sales and tough austerity measures threaten consumer spending power.

The Frankfurt show, which opens to the media on September 13, is traditionally an opportunity for German car manufacturers show their new premium models.
