British police charge six with terrorism offences

LONDON (Reuters) - Six men have been charged with terrorism offences a week after they were arrested in a police operation in Birmingham, Britain's second largest city, police said on Sunday.

Four of the men were charged with preparing for acts of terrorism in the UK, while the other two were charged with failing to disclose information, West Midlands Police said in a statement.

Irfan Nasser, 30, of Sparkhill, and Irfan Khalid, 26, of Balsall Heath, are accused of preparing for an act of terrorism, and traveling to Pakistan for training in terrorism, said police.

Ashik Ali, 26, of Balsall Heath, and Rahi Ahmed, 25, of Moseley, face charges related to planning a bombing campaign in the UK, the force added.

Two other suspects, Bahader Ali, 28, and Mohammed Rizwan, 32, both from Sparkbrook, are both charged with failing to disclose information about acts of terrorism.

The six men will appear at West London Magistrates Court on Monday. They were arrested in a counter-terrorism operation in Birmingham on Monday last week. The men, all from Birmingham, allegedly committed the offences between Christmas Day last year and September 19, the police said.

A seventh man, aged 20 and also from Birmingham, who was arrested on Thursday, was still bring questioned, said police. Officers have until September 29 to charge, release or apply for a further warrant of detention for the detained suspect.

His agenda stalled and his popularity sinking as a result, President Obama is hoping for more than just his own re-election next year. He's wishing that the Democrats can take back the House and return Nancy Pelosi as House speaker.

While he was addressing immigration policy in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute 34th Annual Awards Gala Wednesday night, having Pelosi back would certainly reignite his plans and help his legacy.

"We need an immigration policy that works," said the president. "I wish I had a magic wand and could make this all happen on my own. There are times where—until Nancy Pelosi is speaker again—I'd like to work my way around Congress," he said to applause.

Then while pushing his American Dream Act to provide conditional permanent residency to certain illegal alien-students, he added: " I know Nancy Pelosi is ready to act."

Full Tilt Poker in 'Ponzi charge'

  Online poker is a multi-billion-dollar industry despite being banned in the US US authorities have accused the owners of online gambling site Full Tilt Poker of operating a huge Ponzi scheme that defrauded players out of $440m (£289m).
Among those accused of receiving money from the alleged scheme were famous poker stars, said attorney Preet Bharara in a statement.
"Full Tilt was not a legitimate poker company, but a global Ponzi scheme," she said.
No one from Full Tilt was available for comment.
The firm, along with two other online poker companies - PokerStars and Absolute Poker - was charged with money laundering and illegal gambling in April.
Additional charges have now been filed alleging that Full Tilt is a Ponzi scheme, a type of fraudulent investment, and naming professional poker stars Christopher Ferguson and Howard Lederer as recipients of money.
The two men, who US news agencies reported were not available for comment, were among the directors of the company.
The Justice Department said Full Tilt "defrauded players by misrepresenting that their funds on deposit in online gambling accounts were safe, secure and available for withdrawal at any time.
"In reality, Full Tilt Poker did not maintain funds sufficient to repay all players, and in addition, the company used player funds to pay board members and other owners more than $440m since April 2007," it said.
Ms Bharara added: "Full Tilt insiders lined their own pockets with funds picked from the pockets of their most loyal customers while blithely lying to both players and the public alike about the safety and security of the money deposited with the company."
Although online gambling gambling is illegal in the US, internet poker remains a multi-billion-dollar industry because companies use a variety of ways to flout the law, including locating operations offshore.
Full Tilt is based in the Channel Island of Alderney.
